Do you STILL have the kernel module as your first soundcard? Not sure how alsa handles that, maybe your alsa card is handled as card 1. You can either change the module for your internal card to the equivalent alsa module as I and others already suggested (see above) or try alsamixer -c1 That will try to open the second card.
