Hello!
If you're interested in GUIs I can't help you much. There is muse, which is
pretty much on the way to cubase-standard, then there is ardour (with or
without GUI ardour-ksi) and there is ecasound (qtecasound for GUI). I don't
know about ecasound's GUI-mode, but the console-interface works fine with me.
It is a little bit more complicated, but it supports multitrack hd-recording.
Unfortunately the MIDI-side is still very weak. With muse I know you can
record MIDI as well as audio. Ardour: I think it too supports MIDI and audio
and multitrack. For muse and ardour I don't know the exact address, but you
can find that one on Dave Phillips' sound-page, for ecasound it is:
  www.eca.cx/ecasound
Well and I newarly forgot glame. But I don't know, if it is mostly for
editing purposes or if it also supports recording. It's a powerful tool
anyway.
I hope, that I could help you a bit.
One question of topic: Can you tell me the last thing a shutdown
linux-system prints? I think it's something like: "All processes killed", but
I'm not sure.
  Thanks!
  Kindest regards
        Julien
