[Alsa-user] Problems with via82xx (0.9.0rc7)

Hi,
Having downloaded alsa-driver, alsa-lib, alsa-utils (all 0.9.0rc7), I compiled and inserted the driver, with seemingly no errors. The same happened with alsa-lib and alsa-utils. Everything seems to work fine, and lsmod shows up with snd-via82xx. alsamixer lets me unmute and set the channel volumes fine. However when it comes to testing the drivers, playing a track using mpg123, there is no sound, but mpg123 doesn't show any errors at all. Anyone have any tips on what I could try next to find where this is going wrong?

OS: slackware-current (4-feb-2003)
Hardware: VIA8223A Southbridge AC97 on Gigabyte GA7VTXE motherboard
GCC: gcc-3.2.1
