Hello,

I was trying to install the latest Alsa drivers (for a reason I'll get to in a moment), but after installing from source, I get:
"unresolved symbol kmap_pagetable" when trying to start alsa. I'm running SuSE 8.0 and I do not have this problem with Alsa 0.9.0rc6. I have an ISA SB16 in a VIA MVP3 (1 ISA,3 PCI, and 1 AGP slot populated). [Yes, I know the MVP3 is a dog...]

I'd use Alsa 0.9.0rc6, but when I try to use direct alsa (through alsaplayer or the alsa xmms plugin) my machine eventually locks up. It seems that setting the buffer from the xmms alsa plugin to anything above 1000 ms causes an immediate lock-up. If I run it at 500 ms or below I can reproduce the lock-up every time by trying to save a file to disk from Mozilla. As soon as the prompt appears my machine freezes and the only way to restart is by using the reset button. I don't have any IO resource conflicts. My computer seems to randomly lock-up (when not using Mozilla) whenever I access the hard-drive (sometimes accessing the harddrive will lock it up, other times it won't). I might mention that I'm only using the native IDE controller for my swap (DMA multi-mode 2, flawed UDMA33 chipset implementation) and a Promise ATA133 PCI adapter for my Linux partition. It will always lock-up within 15 minutes of starting xmms even if just my screensaver is running. Most times when I'm not using Mozilla, it will lock-up with the HD LED lit. Again I need to use the reset button to restart (I might mention it is stable without sound enabled). Oddly, OSS emulation does not exhibit this problem, I can play xmms for days without ever locking-up (I left xmms running for 3 days just to check). The problem with OSS emulation is that it is apparently being resampled as I get poor "modulated" sound (if that makes any sense). It sounds fuzzy.

I guess my questions are:
1) Is the lock-up a hardware issue (works fine in XP, but maybe still a hardware issue)?
2) Does the OSS emulation issue have something to do with the README about sample rate conversions?
3) Does RC7 solve any of these problems? (and if so, what to do about the unresolved symbol message?)

Thanks for any help.

-Wes-
