For whatever reason, I felt the 'upgrading' to Alsa 09rc7 may improve the sound quality of my laptop just a bit.
Here are the specifics: Tecra 8100: pIII 700mhz;256mb ram; YAMAHA YMF744B-R (DS-1S) sound 'stuff' Red Hat 7.3 kernel: 2.4.18-3; I did a vanilla install of RH7.3 fresh downloads of: alsa-driver-0.9.0rc7, alsa-lib-0.9.0rc7, alsa-oss-0.9.0rc1, alsa-utils-0.9.0rc7 Upon installation of RH 7.3 (months) ago, RH's sndconfig located and installed some sound drivers that worked OK but had an occasional snap/pop at the end of playing sounds (primarily waves and gnome sound events). This driver may have been Alsa 05x. The snap and pops were annoying enuff that I decided to give Alsa 09 a spin. my configure line in the drivers directory was ./configure --with-cards=ymfpci --with-sequencer=yes --with-oss=yes I did make install. I also did ./configure;make install for: lib, oss, and utils. In the driver directory I found a 'utils', I ran the 'alsaconf' program which detected my sound 'stuff' and added some stuff to /etc/modules.conf (see below) and said use a mixer to un mute stuff. I jacked 'Master' and 'PCM' to 100 with alasamixer and used amixer make sure these where on/unmuted. I tested with : aplay /usr/share/sounds/phone.wav Now all I hear is a snap at the beginning of the wav and a pop at the end. There is some staticy stuff, sometimes as it is playing... How can I make Alsa sound better? Or what am I doing wrong? I don't need 'audiofile' quality (like the hardware would even support that anyway), I just like nice gnome event sounds and gaim event sounds. Oh and decent flash sound effects would be good; since I play some silly flash games with my kids. An occasional CD is played too.
