I had already installed alsa-kernel 2.4.18_19.8 rpm along with alsa-driver, alsa-lib, alsa-lib-devel and alsa-utils. But at that time, my kernel was 2.4.18-14. So, I wasn't able to play sound through any means, either through XMMS or some other way. Even at KDE startup, it displayed an error message "Could not find /dev/dsp". Now, that I have upgraded my kernel to the same version i.e. 2.4.18-19.8, I am still not able to hear sound. So, I thought to uninstall the rpm's using "rpm -e" command, but was unable to do so. When I again try to install the same rpm (the ones that are already installed) through "rpm -ivh" command, it again doesn't allow me to do that. It just hangs... I then have to explicitly kill the process.
Please help me out, it's absolutely urgent. How should I go about solving this problem. My sound card is Intel 82801DB AC'97 Audio. I am using Redhat 8.0 on an i686 machine (Pentium IV).
Regards,
Kanika Garg
