The ES1938 chip doesn't have a wavetable synthesizer. You can use either
the FM synthesizer or a software synthesizer like timidity or iiwusynth.

What parameters did you use when running sbiload?
Usually, you'd use something like
sbiload -p 65:0 -4 /some/where/std.o3
