I got installed alsa 9r6 with a sbpci512 in a Mandrake9 box. All common applications work well: kde3, xine with alsa-plugin, xmms with alsa-plugin, alsaplayer, and some more.

But I tried to run quake3 and quake2 but it stop when try to initialize the sound system. The console window says something like "inilializing sound" and nothing more happen.

Is there a special configuration that I need to run quake?

Why it stops when initialize the sound?

Because it looks for a /dev/dsp. So either you load the OSS
compatibility modules (which is no problem) or you change the device q3
is looking for in the ~/.q3a/baseq3/q3config.cfg

Actually if quake cannot find the sound device it will simply proceed with no sound (I think). But there was a recent post explaining how to use the proc system interface of alsa to force quake3 to open the dsp device in playback only mode, which should solve the problem.
