Update.
I installed Gnome-alsamixer which allows me to turn the switches on.
I get output from all the speakers if I switch "Line-In As Surround" and
"Duplicate Front" (?) but apps still don't work. xine keeps
saying

audio_out: stream audio format is 48000 kHz sampling rate, 16 bits. mode
is 64.
audio_alsa_out: Audio Device name = surround51
audio_alsa_out: Number of channels = 6
ALSA lib pcm.c:1717:(snd_pcm_open_conf) Invalid type for PCM surround51
definition (id: surround51, value: cards.pcm.surround51)audio_alsa_out:
snd_pcm_open() failed: Invalid argument
audio_alsa_out: >>> check if another program don't already use PCM <<<

when I select 5.1 output

This thing is driving me mad.

Thanks a lot.
Bye

Stefano
