no, it's a difference of the way of playback.
alsaplayer reads CDDA data and plays it as PCM, while xmms plays CD
normally, which will be routed via a cable from CD-ROM to the
soundcard.

alsaplayer doesn't need you to set up the CD volume, but only PCM
setup.  xmms (or other CD-player applications) needs, in contrast, CD
setup only for playback of CD.


please make sure that you

- unmute "CD" in alsamixer,
- adjust the volume of "CD" in alsamixer,
- have a cable connected between CD-ROM and your soundcard.
