I wouldn't. I have one and it's worked well with most of the alsa 0.9 versions I've tried. I'd suggest reading this page in the ALSA Wiki but it seems to only give you the index at the moment. http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=ice1712 envy24control got changed at some point and things got odd with some of the control sliders, but I never had it lock up my box. Your speed problems sound like what happens when a file with sr = 44100 is played back with sr = 48000. I don't know why that's happening.
