The most likely cause of the problem is a missing cable from the
analog out on the back of your CD-ROM to your soundcard. Some versions
of Windows use digital audio extraction: data is taken from the drive using
the IDE cable and digital -> analog conversion is done in the soundcard.
Alsaplayer does the same in Linux. AFAIK xmms also has a plugin that does
the same.

Search for 'cards_limit' in the alsa-driver-0.9.0rc6/INSTALL file, the first card is
snd-card-0 in ALSA :)
