Ok, it's definitely ALSA. I performed a "/etc/init.d/alsasound restart" (which includes, among other, removing the ALSA modules from the running kernel and then reinserting them) and that fixes the problem.
Probably alsa-0.9.0rc3 does not work well with Red Hat 8.0 I'll try 0.9.0rc5 and see how it goes.
