I have got no answers from the list, so I'm answering my own posting ...

Meanwhile I have unplugged my NIC, and so resolved the potential IRQ
collision, but that changed nothing, niente, nada.

I don't have any ideas anymore what could be the cause of this problem. Now
I think I'll stay with 0.5.12a and wait until the real 0.9.0 is released. And
then give 0.9.0 a try.

As long term Suse linux user I'm a little bit frustrated about the missing
assistance in this list
