unfortunately i am not using devfs/d, though recently i was. i wish this were the 
reason.
i am using a static fs which is why this is particularly odd.

following Jesse's suggestion i hid the drivers. to my surprise this resulted in 
/dev/snd being generated on startup as normal!

this is a clue, but i don't know where to take it.. anyone ideas?
