[Alsa-user] ./snddevice woes - where are my /dev/snd's going?

hi there new to this list and alsa.

i am having a problem that i see has been expressed but not clearly fixed in the 
threads by quite a few other people.
i am having the problem of snd_ctl_open failed when starting any sound application.

naturally the first port of call is "have i used the snddevices script to generate the 
dev entries" and the answer is yes.  
after using it *alsa appears to work fine* 
BUT my problem is that on restart, the /dev/snd directory *completely disappears* 
forcing me to use ./snddevices again before i can use alsa!!

i noticed my ./snddevices was pointing to alsa-sound.conf or similar instead of 
sound.state. 
even when i changed this in the script there was no change.

at present i am running this script from .xinitrc on restart and it is annoying and 
unreliable..
if anyone has a clue as to a fix for this, let me know. i have two performances in a 
week and would 
love to be using my new alsa dependent applications.
