As I posted a few days ago, I have an old SB AWE64 and was trying to get full duplex in particular to work with Alsa and was having numerous problems. Specifically, trying to record and play simultaneously (AKA full duplex) would work, but after that, sounds would play at roughly half speed and there would be a lot of popping and clicking. Also, any sound played with a utility that uses OSS emulation would end with either a sharp click or high squeal. For example, "play test.wav" would play the sound and a loud squeal at the end. However, "aplay test.wav" which is a native Alsa utility would not produce the pop or squeal. Well, I am now using 0.5.12A of Alsa with near 100% success. No clicks and the sound doesn't slow down when using full duplex. In fact, I can now use Speak Freely to carry on a voice conversation over the Internet without fear of odd behavior. Well, it's not quite perfect as it sometimes transmits a few seconds of dead carrier before my voice, but it's usable which is saying a lot more than I could with either the stock Linux drivers which only work in half duplex and still generate recording overruns and the newer versions of Alsa which acted so weird. The only minor problem still existing with 0.5.12A is that xmp doesn't play mod files correctly when using the AWE synthesizer driver, but this is very unimportant compared to the other problems. I can imagine that a lot has changed between the 0.5.12A release and the 0.9.0.X releases, but I am wondering what specifically would have caused such odd behavior in the newer programs. It concerns me since Alsa is now built into 2.5 kernels, so will presumably be standard once the 2.6 stable series starts. I'd like to feel comfortable by that time knowing that whatever sound card I have, if it's supported by Alsa, I will at least get usable functionality from it.
