You need to use one of the cs423x drivers (the cs4236 driver
works fine, with power management and all)
AIUI, the cs4610/11 in the TP 600e isn't connected to an ac97,
but some other chip, and the alsa drivers don't support this
setup (mostly because there are no docs on how to do so :) )
You might also try asking stuff on the linux-thinkpad mailing
list -- They have lots of experience in dealing with thinkpads:
