OK, I have downloaded, compiled and installed alsa-driver-0.9.0rc3

It failed to compile on 2.4.20-pre11.

back with 2.4.19, it seemed to compile OK.

What is more, after installing I can actually load the module
(snd-via8233)

After playing with the mixer levels, I am even getting sound out of
this thing!

Trouble is, I am getting these messages in the logs:

and the sound is crap, very static.

Anyone got any ideas?
