Seems that u use OSS and not the alsa-driver at all.Have u used this option when compile: --with-cards=(your card chipset) and modprobe snd-(your card chipset) and in modules.conf used snd-(your card chipset). Have u compiled ./snddevices and installed when u where in alsa-driver dir.? What options did u use when u compiled the driver and the libs? Have u started the alsasound and unmuted the alsamixer.Check this first.
