some comments from what I remember are below...

Maybe referring to alsa's OSS emulation?

Are you running kde's sound server? I think they use
artsd. Try turning that off.

there also may be a kde service polling your cdrom drive
to see if you've put a disk in and automatically open it for
you.  Kill that stupid thing.

It might also matter *which* IRQ your device gets,
as discussed at http://www.boosthardware.com/LAU/guide/
(click on "Low Latency mini-howto").

Also check the PCI latency of the bus that it's on.
