Frans meant, that you have the sound card module from the OSS kernel
drivers loaded, and not the one in ALSA. If the OSS modules captures
the sound card, you cannot use the ALSA drivers. So if you want to use
ALSA, you will first have to check, where the OSS modules is loaded,
say with 
$ grep -r es1371 /etc/modutils/* /etc/modules.conf
and remove it there. 

Then make a correct ALSA modules configuration, maybe not with
alsaconf (this seems to be broken) but instead by hand using the
examples in /etc/alsa/modutils/ and the doc on
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/
