Oh, I see what you're thinking. That's the "monitor mixer."
It's not much like a typical consumer soundcard mixer.
The ice1712 provides a built-in stereo-output mixer which can
take feeds from all of the inputs and outputs, and put its stereo
output L and R into any 2 of the outputs. The idea is that you might
use this mix while working with a DAW to construct e.g. a headphone mix
for the musicians. You could also use it to mix various input channels
into a single source for a stereo recording, but IMHO it's a bit
clunky for that and it's better to use an application with its own
decent mixer.

In the monitor mixer, it's true that you can take an input source
and put it in varying amounts to the L and R sides of
the monitor mix. But each *source* (PCM in 1, PCM in 2...)
is a single mono signal.

(IMHO, the envy24control monitor interface is a
bit clunky - I'd rather see a single volume control
and a pan slider for each PCM source.)

In the, er, routing matrix (I forget what envy24control calls it, and
my desktop computer is seriously broken right now so I can't check!),
you can connect various inputs to various outputs. Two of the
output options are something like "PCM mix L" and "PCM mix R".
This is the output from the monitor mixer.

Note that if you don't select "PCM mix" in the routing matrix,
the monitor mixer has absolutely no effect on anything else.
This was a source of some confusion for me when I first got
my ice1712 card.

That's right, but if your ICE1712 card has, say, 6 mono inputs,
you're not going to magically turn them into 6 stereo inputs.
You can think of it as 6 mono channels or 3 stereo pairs or whatever
you like. But on these cards, the routing is up to you;
there's no built-in concept of "stereo" *except* in the monitor
mixer. Notice that there's another tab in the mixer which
shows you the volume controls for each ADC and DAC. They're
not grouped in stereo pairs, and each input or output has only
a single slider.
