You might assume wrong here, but not very wrong: It is possible, that the MS software is reading directly from the CD, i.e. it is ripping it on the fly, instead of actually playing it through a wire or the headphones plug. To do this on Linux you also need CD-reader software, like the xmms plugin "libcdread".
