Thanks to all you on the list who have spent time helping me over the last week or so!
i finally have mp3s playing on my new linux box! And I can hear them!!
Here is a working modules.conf entry to get sound working
for the ALC650 chipset on the MSI kt3 ultra-aru motherboard

alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-via8233
alias snd-card-1 snd-via8233
options snd-card-via8233 snd_id="Via8233" snd_index=0
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
the reason i had no sound before from xmms was an error in this line
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
the line previously incorrectly read alias sound-slot-0 snd-via8233
this correction was spotted from the
getting started with alsa (http://www.boosthardware.com/LAU/guide/)
link form the main alsa page
following the links: alsa howto wiki, soundcards, via8233, The module options for via8233
the correct info was there all along!!!
