I monkeyed around some more and it seems that I have found a workaround to
the problem above. One has to load the snd-cs46xx module, then unload it and
then load it again. That cures the garbled sound. Simple really, though I have
no idea why so. Put it in the startup scripts and voila. 

The rest about digital in/out support and output channels selection - maybe
that should go into the wishlist for future developments of cs46xx driver.
