I upgraded to SuSE 8.0 last night, moving to kernel 2.4.18-4GB
and alsa 0.9.0 cvs20020320-12. Audio playback works fine, but
line-in recording now suffers severe distortion. Not amplitude
distortion--it sounds like a sped-up recording of an AM radio
station tuned in single sideband mode. I tried different aps
for recording, different audio sources to line-in, no change.

The soundcard is a Hoontech Soundtrack Digital-NX (trident),
but I briefly installed a Creative Labs Soundblaster PCI 512
(emu10k1) which gave the same distortion. The Digital-NX is
currently reinstalled.

/etc/modules.conf presently looks like this (as generated by
yast2):

 options snd-trident snd_enable=1 snd_index=0 snd_pcm_channels=32
  snd_wavetable_size=8192
 alias char-major-14 off

 # Alsa sound support.
 # Warning: please don't modify comments over aliases 'snd-card-#'
 alias char-major-116 snd
 options snd snd_cards_limit=1 snd_major=116
 # qnJ_.TrdEjYGlfU7:4DWave NX
 alias snd-card-0 snd-trident

 # YaST2: sound system dependent part
 #
 alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
 alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
 alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
 alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
 alias sound-service-0-11 snd-mixer-oss
 alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

With this error in /var/log/messages at last attempt recording:

... kernel: ALSA ../alsa-kernel/core/pcm_lib.c:121: Unexpected
      hw_pointer value (stream = 1, delta: -1, max jitter = 8192):
      wrong interrupt acknowledge?
