OK, I copied the example to modules.conf. There seemed to be a problem with the snd_enble_midi option:
]# /sbin/modprobe snd-cmipci /lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/sound/pci/snd-cmipci.o: invalid parameter parm_snd_enable_midi /lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/sound/pci/snd-cmipci.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/sound/pci/snd-cmipci.o failed /lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/sound/pci/snd-cmipci.o: insmod snd-cmipci failed So I commented out that line and ended up with: My complete modules.conf file: alias eth0 3c59x alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx alias char-major-116 snd alias snd-card-0 snd-cmipci # options snd-cmipci snd_enable_midi=1 alias char-major-14 soundcore alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss alsactl stop/start reported no errors. Still no sound and still getting the error message from aplay. Interestingly enough, running alsactl stop and start do create an audible pop from line out (via my receiver and speakers), so something's going on. I don't know what's causing the "snd: Yamaha DS-XG PCI soundcard not found or device busy" line to appear. I believe this is the only sound card in the system (I've got the case off and I'm looking now to make sure that's true). ------------------------------------------------------------ James M.
