Are you getting anything using the OSS drivers at all? I think they used
to run under the stock SoundBlaster code, which even had an "esstype"
option at one point to specify either a 688 or 1688. If you can't get it
going under either, it may be a resource thing.

I don't have one in anything right now, but I set up a LOT of these
bastards when I worked in a computer shop back in '95-'96 or so - do
you know if it's a Plug and Play capable card or not? The early PNP
models were HELL to get stable at times. I loved the old ones that were
just "set and forget". I vaguely recall being able to turn PNP off on
some models - if you can find a way to do that, it might help.

The resources (as I recall) were almost invariably io 0x220, irq 5, dma
1 and 5 and synth at 0x300 OR 0x330 - I think the latter, but I'm a bit
fuzzy since it's been a while.

If it's a PNP card, you might need to set up exclusions in your BIOS to
make sure IRQ 5 never gets assigned to anything else. The manufacturers
of the ones I used to get claimed that PNP worked, but I never saw many
of those cards willing to give up that IRQ and there we confilcts
everywhere all the time. Hell, PNP on ISA was always a pain in the ass.
I'm so glad I never see that bus any more ...

Anyway, feel free to mail me, but I'm not sure how much help I can be -
but I will see if I've still got one in a drawer somewhere and drop it
in an old machine.

Mike.
