Forget it. I have no idea what's going on here. I found another old microphone in the house, and plugged it in, just to check. The bloody thing works fine. My other microphone (the one I like), for some obscure reason, hates my sound card. I can't figure this one out. It works on the tape deck. It works on the iMac, it works on the other PC running Windows. Plug it into my main machine - nothing. Not so much as a crackle. Plug another microphone in where it just was - everything works as expected. Thanks for the help, but ALSA is no longer a suspect. It's going down as a bizarre hardware issue. I'll keep screwing with it at that level. The plug is just slightly off in its dimensions perhaps? No idea.
