That's ancient. You might consider upgrading to the current 0.9.x series. Much improved. Do you have a directory called /etc/modutils/ ? If so, add a file called "alsa" in that directory, put your config stuff in it, and then run update-modules which will combine everything from /etc/modutils/ and put it into /etc/modules.conf.
