See my bug report: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=518443&group_id=27464&atid=390601 This report is using the CVS sources from 2/17, but the 0.9beta12 Debian source package exhibits the same problem. I was able to stop the hard freezes by compiling a non-SMP kernel. But that is not really a solution, since I'd really like to use my second CPU. However, it did finally confirm that the problem is a broken driver, not misconfiguration. My suggestion is to do what I plan to do: buy an OSS-supported soundcard and try ALSA again in a year or two to see if it works then.
