I have tried several times to upgrade from alsa 0.5 to 0.9. Until now I
have always failed with "device or resource busy" messages. This time I
plastered the source code with my own trace messages (since compiling with
debug enabled produced no extra information), and discovered the reason for
the device busy messages was that the id I had given as a parameter in
modules.conf began with the forbidden string "card".

On changing the string for the id, I was able to load the driver. Most
sound applications do not seem to work: the sound comes out as squawking
and my log file fills up with the following messages:

  Mar 31 23:41:02 linux kernel: ALSA ../alsa-kernel/core/pcm_lib.c:120:
  Unexpected hw_pointer value (stream = 0, delta: -184, max jitter = 8192):
  wrong interrupt acknowledge?

Is there any hope of getting Alsa 0.9 to work on my machine? Alsa 0.5 seems
to work OK. I only want to upgrade, because programs such as Xine have
dropped support for 0.5.

System:

ECS Elitegroup K7VZA mainboard (with KT133A/686B)
  SB PCI 128 sound card
  SuSE 7.2 with kernel 2.4.4
