I searched the archives and tried out some settings with alsamixer but I just can't get my sblive to work correctly.
Currently I'm using the normal oss kernel driver. I just plug in my second speaker pair into the second output adjust the OGain and physical volume a bit so that the rear speakers (which are quieter) have the same level as the front speakers and it just works[tm]. The Master switch controls only front speakers but pcm controls output to both front and rear. (so the meanings are switched from what I'd expect) I'm using mplayer to play movies. AC3 Output to the oss drivers works except for one thing. I get wonderful surround noises, I can hear the plane go from left to right etc. pp. but as soon as people start speaking, their voices are distorted. Now that's where alsa comes into play. I thought alsa might work better as I've heard from some ppl that they happily use the much better alsa. Sadly alsa worsens my case. Mplayers alsa output plugin can't use more than 2 channels, ok so I tried oss emulation output but I get the same result as with the normal kernel drivers. I nevertheless tried to get everything else working with alsa but to no avail. In alsamixer there are quite some settings (many of which I don't know what they actually mean. Yes I read the SB-Live-mixer doc, believe me, it only adds to the confusion, I'm no chipset freak I want sound!). I finally manage to get sound out of the rear speakers, by unmuting some tabs und setting volumes on _many_ others. Can't there be three simple front, rear, center tabs ? Now PCM controls front speakers, master controls front speakers, wave controls front speakers and wave surround (and something else) controls rear speakers. Besides the fact that this is just too much just for some simple volume setting, you can't control the sound from any app that way. The alsa_xmms output plugin can control master or pcm, alright, but then I always have to go to alsamixer to change rear speaker setting. So effectively volume control in xmms is unusable. This doesn't differ in any other program I tried. Is there any chance of getting some _simple_ controls that are actually _usefull_ ? Also what are all these "pcm routing" (?) settings for ? The settings changed from one start of alsamixer to another but I can't say why.
