It's not just you. Using the Alsa 0.5.12a driver, everything works fine for us here at TransGaming, except for the occasional complete hardware lockup.
. I've installed 0.9.12 from CVS and there are no lockups, yet.. but XMMS playback is as you described: jittery and annoying.
