24-bit wav files can be funny animals. There are several problems:
1) 24-bit audio files often have a 32-bit structure inside (i.e. one byte of 
each sample is blank)
2) If (1) then there is no agreement about which one (for example: snd leaves 
the most-significant byte 0, while arecord leaves the least significant 0)
3) I'm not certain that WAV is actually supposed to be able to handle 24-bit 
samples.
