Greetings,

I recently acquired a PCI 512 (emu10k1) soundcard with the hope of
playing MIDI files directly with the Alsa drivers.

I am using a kernel (2.4.17) with DEVFS and the /dev/sequencer should
be automatically created after loading the modules with:

modprobe snd-card-emu10k1
modprobe snd-synth-emu10k1

After compiling and loading all the sound modules however, no
/dev/sequencer appears. Therefore, using sfxload, I can't install
any sound fonts to use with pmidi or other MIDI programs.

Using the OSS sound modules (emu10k1.o) that are a part of the kernel,
the /dev/sequencer *is* automatically created. But this does not
happen with the Alsa modules.

Has anyone on this list been successful in using the emu10k1 to
directly play MIDI files using Alsa?

If so, has this been done under DEVFS?

Are there alternatives to using /dev/sequencer to load sound fonts?

The Alsa Project is a fine endeavor, but, in my opinion, it suffers
from a great lack of suitable documentation.
