Hi

I am using Mandrake 8.1 and ALSA and haven't needed to run ./snddevices
a second time ever. (this must be done from root)

The links it creates shouldn't disappear.

Sorry I can't help with a solution.... however... I reccomend using the
documentation (README & INSTALL) that comes with the ALSA driver.

The only other thing that may be causing an issuee but I really don't
know what it does is the security settings that drakconf sets. Maybe if
you have a high security setting it is removing the links.... although I
really don't know.

run drakconf and set your security to the lowest setting..... You
shouldn't be running an important server (i.e. web server , proxy
e.t.c..) as an audio workstation (especially considering running rt
patches opens up your system anyway) ... so this shouldn't really cause
any issues. You can still use the automated firewall setup in drakconf
if net security is a concern (works fine on mine with "lowest" security
setting and firewall disallowing almost everything).

Lastly, Have you tried installing the Mandrake provided ALSA RPM's. They
aren't up to the minute but should set your sytem up to work with ALSA
based software. Personally I installed ALSA from source without the
RPM's to avoid conflicts

cheers

Allan
