iec958 I think is the digital optical cable in the input. I hope this helps but type in 'alsamixer' Turn up the iec958 meters by pressing the up arrow key. Hit the spacebar if you would like to capture or record from the device. It works in realtime to. I record from the digital optical in. I press play on my multitracker (external source) then type alsamixer While it is playing turn up the mixer controls. When you find the correct mixer you can hit spacebar to choose to record from the device. If you don't record it is still going through your computers speakers. To record then I just open up yarec. I then can do yarec soundfile.aiff. You don't need yarec to do this though. You will here the external device as you turn up the mixer.
