I have looked around for a soundcard with 24bit/96kHz recording ability and
found this Terratec AudioSystem EWX 24/96 soundcard. The recording ability
from an analog input is my main concern and I haven't found info re. ALSA that
ensures me buying that card is a good investment :-)

On Terratecs pages (FAQ and such) they of course state that Linux isn't
supported, but I am happy to find on:

  http://www.alsa-project.org/~goemon/

the following line:

  Terratec EWX24/96 Envy24 ice1712 [C][D]

Ergo, the card seems to be supported in ALSA.

I downloaded the alsa-beta10a packages and looking through documentation and
code I am still wondering about a few things. I attempted to search archives,
but weren't lucky.

The Terratec pages says "Based on the award winning EWS88 MT/D technology" and
ALSA has the same driver for EWS88D, EWS88MT and EWX24/96 (ice1712) and it seems
the same chipset (Envy24), but eg. differences in the IEC958 type of output.
Not that I need the last one [yet], but I am right now just trying to
understand what is going on :-)

My questions boils down to:

1. Will I be able to record (and play) 24bit/96kHz sampled sound with this
card on Linux and ALSA driver and utilities?

2. Are there any known limitations in the Linux-ALSA driver compared to what
the hardware is actually capable of?

3. If there is, is this temporary, is Terratec open and friendly towards
disclosing necessary info and is it being worked on?

4. Is there anything a potential customer can do, and afterwards (if I go ahead
and buy it)? I have never written a hardware driver before, but I'd like to
   help out if I could.

Thanks very much in advance, and I hope you'll all have a Happy New Year, from
this nerd that uses the first couple of hours in 2002 on something like this ;-)

Peter
