I think ALSA does not enable the sequencer and OSS support by
default. I would suggest trying an ALSA driver rebuild after running
configure again with the specific options to enable OSS support (which
I suspect you need for Denemo) and the midi soft-sequencer.

./configure  --with-sequencer=yes --with-oss=yes

I haven't had any success using playmidi with my SB Live! However
there is an ALSA midi sequencer called pmidi which does seem to work
(although I was stalled for quite some time until I discovered the
need for soundfonts to be loaded using sfxload).
