I've been reading that I'm not the only one who couldn't get recording to work on the recent 0.9beta series.
Here's what I've just discovered:
Try using alsamixer and adjust the "Capture" input; I couldn't
record at all until this was unmuted and non zero. Seems
that the mic level is for playback volume, capture is for
recorded channel level- which actually makes more sense.
However the capture vol-control is not available via gmixer- it's only available in alsamixer (afaik) and it's probably far to the right of the controls normally displayed.
For me, this was all that was needed to get speakfreely working.
