First, thanks very much for replying - this has been so frustrating so far!
More details below.

see below - doesn't look very healthy (but the bit that doesn't work - Midi -
looks OK!).

The only place I've found with this info is the INSTALL file in the drivers
distribution and it doesn't list very much for the M-Audio cards. There's
nothing midi-related. I already have the following in my modules.conf:

# alsa sound
alias char-major-116 snd
options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-ice1712

And I tried adding options snd-card-0 snd_enable_midi=1 (and rebooting), but
it made no difference.

The output from sndstat is:

tonto:/etc/modutils# cat /proc/asound/sndstat
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v0.9.0beta10 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux tonto 2.4.14p3n #1 Tue Dec 4 20:52:02 GMT 2001 i686
Config options: 0
Installed drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation
Card config:
M Audio Audiophile 24/96 at 0x9c00, irq 11
Audio devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG
Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG
Midi devices: 0: MPU-401 (UART)
Timers: 7: system timer
Mixers: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

And the appropriate section from the INSTALL file reads:

  Module snd-card-ice1712.o
  -------------------------

    Module for Envy24 (ICE1712) based PCI soundcards.
                        * MidiMan M Audio Delta 1010
                        * MidiMan M Audio Delta DiO 2496
                        * MidiMan M Audio Delta 66
                        * MidiMan M Audio Delta 44
                        * MidiMan M Audio Audiophile 2496
                        * TerraTec EWS 88MT
                        * TerraTec EWS 88D
                        * TerraTec EWX 24/96

    snd_omni      - Omni I/O support for MidiMan M-Audio Delta44/66

    Module supports up to 8 cards and autoprobe. Note: The consumer part
    is not used with all Envy24 based cards (for example in the MidiMan Delta
    serie).

So I don't have the same settings as you, but they don't seem to be required.

Thanks again,
Andrew
