Hello, Ive been trying to make my via8233 onboard
sound work with your alsa software. I can compile and
install the drivers fine, but then nothing happens
when i try to play sound. Ive even tried to cat
foo.au>/dev/snd/pcmS0D0 and i get an error message
saying that it cant write to the device or something
like that.

I was told on the HOWTO file to email you for help.

my sound 'card' is the via8233 with AC'97 codec (from
motherboard manual), i dont have an isapnp.conf file
which shouldnt be an issue because i dont have any isa
slots, and this isnt really a card anyways. I put the
following some lines in the modules.conf file like
these:

alias snd-card-slot0 snd-card-via8233

in the /var/log/messages file there are tons of lines
saying modprobe couldnt find something, but the
drivers are actually isntalled and when i remove
everything and repeat the commands to modprobe
everything again, nothing is added to the log file.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks
   Andrew
