I had the same problem with the 0.5.x driver cs461x.

However, I installed the 0.9.0beta10 (cs46xx), and the sound coming out of
it is fine! (in OSS emulation mode, anyway.. I've had a few problems with
alsa mode.. and no time to try to figure out the problem)

I'm using kernel 2.4.14 on an lfs system
(http://www.linuxfromscratch.org)

You did press 'm' in alsamixer to unmute the card, as well as change the
volume, I assume...
