Hi,

Apologies for such lame questions, but I've just installed ALSA and a
soundcard and am having some problems. This is a new computer - I've never
bothered with computer audio before - and fullish details of the
configuration are at http://www.acooke.org/andrew/writing/tonto.html#alsa

My problems are:

- unless I run modprobe snd-card-ice1712, no modules are loaded. How can
this be done automatically? I assume I have to put something in a file in
/etc/modutils, but it's not clear what or where.

- I've connected the soundcard o/p sockets to an amp, but hear nothing when I
run the KDE CD player. I have un-muted things using the alsa mixer app (and
turned everything to "maximum"). What am I doing wrong? (This was a first
test - in other words I have heard nothing from the card). Is there a
simpler way to test the card?

- I don't understand the alsamixer display - what are all those sliders
controlling?

It's probably obvious that I need an idiot's guide to ALSA. Is there one out
there? Any info I learn will be added to the URL above, so could help become
a mini-howto.

Thanks,
Andrew
