I have tried that, it only outputs through the front speakers.
I also tried -D rear, same thing, and I even tried to run 2 alsaplayers, one 
with -D front, one with -D rear or -D surround40 : the two streams are mixed 
in the front speakers !

And yes I did unmute and set the volume for wave surround.
Could this be a routing issue or something ?
Do I need to enable anything in modules.conf ?
Also, I don't have an asound.conf, is it needed and if so how to generate it ?

I've been able to tell xine to output on 4 channels now, so the problem is 
probably with alsa.
