Thank you for responding. I have moved my response to a different thread, called 'Intermittent Distorted Sound -- Via KT266A with snd-card-via8233'. I inadvertently sent the original post with a thread header too similar to another thread (he is having problems with modprobe, not the sound quality), I think xclipboard mangled it and I didn't notice...oops.
