Are you using KDE?  Then artsd could block other audio apps.
If so, change the configuration for arts (sound server section in kde
control center) to terminate as soon as possible.

Or on Gnome esound would do that.  I have no much idea about
configuration on Gnome, though.

BTW, on maestro3 this doesn't happen since maestro3 driver supports
multiple open.
