THE PROBLEM

I have been using computers for over 20 years but am still pretty computer
iliterate (DOS batch files, Excel Macros and Unix database enquiries are
about my limit).
For a long time I have been using various versions of Windows, Excel & IE to
do my work. This PC is also used by myself and others for entertainment
purposes.
I have managed to convert most of the functions away from Micros**t products
and when I was given the Suse package I thought I could say bye bye forever.

I have an old PC Chips motherboard with SiS6326 Graphics card and CMI8330
sound onboard. I have sorted out the display and the only missing function
on KDE is the sound.

Can someone help an idiot get the setup correct.

ACTIONS SO FAR
I have waded through hundreds of pages of "help" documentaion and obtained
lots of contradictory advice!

I have had the "kernel sound" working, but that solution just created new
problems.

The route I have since gone down involves down loading the new Drivers from
the Suse FTP site and installing them by way of rpm -Uvh commands.

I then ran alsaconf which found my soundcard (and something about a Legacy
one which ignored) however, when it tried to do the next bit (aplay) I got a
no such device error. I won't describe what has happened since that point (8
re-installs and counting!) as there is so much contradictary advice out
there.

Sorry if this is either too simple or out of the scope of this list, but the
few times I felt I was getting close it came from this site.

Thank you for your patience.

Paul
